Adventure Tourism

New Zealand is an adventure lover’s paradise. The country offers an abundance of activities for thrill seekers including bungy jumping, skydiving, whitewater and blackwater rafting, paragliding, jet boating and zorbing.

Zorbing - rolling down a steep hill in a giant plastic inflatable ball    Fly By Wire

New Zealand is the home of bungy jumping, the first being at Kawarau River near Queenstown, operated by AJ Hackett. There are now a number of operators throughout the country that offer bungy jumps, generally situated on bridges over beautiful river gorges.

Skydiving and paragliding - in tandem with the instructor for the inexperienced - is popular in the main resort centres throughout the country, such as Queenstown, Nelson and Rotorua.

New Zealand’s network of rivers offer plenty of opportunities for whitewater rafting and jet boating. Blackwater rafting (rafting in the dark!) is popular at the Waitomo Caves near Hamilton, and Nile River Canyon near Westport.

Zorbing, i.e. rolling downhill in a big inflatable ball, is one of New Zealand’s newest adventure activities.

For the ultimate thrill you may wish to try one of the fly by wire rides (situated in Wellington and Queenstown). As its name suggests, fly by wire allows you full control of a tethered high speed plane.

A number of specialist tour companies in New Zealand offer packages that include a selection, or all, of the above activities, and more…
