New Zealand Ferry Services
There are several ferry companies that offer passenger and car/van transport
between the various islands of New Zealand. The main ferry companies operate
across the Cook Strait, between Wellington in the North Island and Picton in
the South Island. The largest operator is the Interisland Line, which operates
the Interislander ferries, and the Lynx, a faster catamaran. The Interisland
ferries offer 5 return sailings a day and the trip takes approximately 3 hours.
The Lynx takes 2 hours 15 minutes and makes 2 return crossings a day in the
summer months. The ships are well equipped with cafes, bars, restaurants and
shops. Prices vary, but expect to pay $230 one way for a car and driver at the
standard rate, and $50 each way for adult passengers. Each sailing has limited
fares at discounted prices so it pays to book well in advance, especially
during the summer holidays around Christmas and New Year. Its smaller rival,
Strait Shipping, operates the Bluebridge ferry between Wellington and Picton.
They have fewer sailings and their passenger facilities are basic, but their
fares are cheaper than their rival’s standard fare. Prices are $150 each way
for a car and driver, and $40 each way for adult passengers.
Ferry services also operate between Invercargill and Stewart Island, and
between Auckland and the various ports and Islands of the Hauraki Gulf. The
dominant operator in Auckland is Fullers Group; services include regular ferry
crossings and cruises.
