New Zealand Train Services
New Zealand’s rail network operates between the main centres, stopping at
smaller provincial towns en route. Whilst its network is far from extensive,
rail journeys take passengers through spectacular countryside, and are a
pleasant and relaxing way of experiencing the scenery. The carriages are
comfortable and have large panoramic windows to maximize the view. There is
also a buffet carriage. The rail network is operated by TranzScenic, and runs
between Auckland and Wellington in the North Island, and between Picton and
Christchurch in the South Island. TranzRail also operate the TranzAlpine, a
world renowned train journey that starts in Christchurch and crosses the
spectacular Southern Alps enroute to Greymouth on the West Coast. There is a
range of fare brackets, and prices vary depending on the ticket purchased.
Travel passes can be purchased which provide savings for those planning
multiple train journeys.
TranzMetro operate a commuter service for Wellington and Auckland. These
operate from the city centres to a number of suburbs and towns in the region.
New Zealand also has a number of special excursion trains. These include The
Taieri Gorge Railway, which operates from Dunedin, and the Kingston Flyer, a
vintage steam train that runs between Kingston and Queenstown.
